In the past, brick and mortar sportsbooks were the only option that people had when it came to NFL betting. However, today's betting landscape is vastly different from earlier decades because online sportsbooks are so prevalent.

Of course, just because internet sportsbooks are prevalent doesn't mean that everybody knows the ins and outs of online NFL betting. This being said, let's take a closer look at how to place NFL bets over the internet.

Choosing an Online Sportsbook

The first thing that needs to be addressed in regard to making football wagers online is picking an Internet sportsbook. We highly recommend that you do some research on this matter first by checking out the promotions, variety of NFL bets, customers service, company reputability and bonuses that a sportsbook offers before signing up.

Once you've found a good book to start placing wagers at, the next step involves creating an account and making a deposit. As for the latter, it's always a good idea to check and make sure the sportsbook you choose offers a payment method that works for you.

Placing Bets

After you've signed up and made a deposit, you'll be eligible to start making NFL bets. Any quality site will feature a large variety of bets such as point spreads, moneylines, totals (over/under), futures, parlays and prop bets. But the most common wagers that you'll see are point spreads, moneylines and totals.

When browsing through the sportsbook, you need to select the desired type of bet and confirm it. To illustrate an example of this, take a look at the following sample line:

Tennessee Titans  +6.5 (point spread) -170 (moneyline) o/u 35.5 (totals)
Indianapolis Colts   -6.5 (point spread) +210 (moneyline) o/u 35.5 (totals)

In this example, you can see that the Colts are 6.5-point favorites in the point spread, +210 favorites in the moneyline, and the totals line is 35.5. All of the available numbers should be highlighted so that users can click on the desired wager and continue placing their bet. So if you wanted to wager on the Colts to cover the spread, you'd click on the -6.5 link and confirm the bet.

Receiving Winnings/Deducting Losses

After your wager has been decided, you'll either have winnings placed directly into your account, or losses deducted from it. What's nice is that this is all done automatically, so if you won a bet, you wouldn't have to travel anywhere to collect winnings like at a land-based sportsbook.

Instead, the online sportsbook software makes adjustments to your account accordingly. If for any reason you ever wanted to cash out winnings, you could simply visit the cashiers section and complete the transaction.

It may take you a few moments to get acclimated to using an online sportsbook - especially if you've always made bets at land-based books. However, the ease of use and convenience of betting websites makes them the perfect place to do your NFL betting.
