Australia doesn't have an extensive World Cup history, given that this is only their fourth time in the event. But the Aussies can boast of now having made three straight trips to the Cup. This particular time wasn't overly impressive as they finished just 3-4-1 (W-D-L) in the last round of AFC qualification matches. Still, this mediocre record was enough to put Australia comfortably ahead of Jordan (3-1-4) for Group B's second automatic qualifying spot.

It would appear that the "Socceroos" are facing an uphill battle in one of the 2014 World Cup's toughest groups. They're stuck in a pool that includes the world's top-ranked team in Spain, along with two more very good squads in the Netherlands and Span.

But while Australia may not be able to match these teams with regard to talent, they're a hardworking group that can frustrate opposing teams with their physical style of play. Plus, they've got plenty of experience, if nothing else.

This experience begins with 33-year-old veteran Tim Cahill. Tied for the most goals in Australian history, Cahill is quite accurate on the goal when given a clear shot. And while he may have lost a step or two in the speed department, the Red Bulls star will be on a mission in what's likely his final World Cup.

Mile Jedinak will also be a key component to Australia's chances of winning a match in group play. The midfielder had an excellent season for Crystal Palace and will be looking to carry this momentum on into the 2014 Cup.

One more thing to watch in regard to this team is the manager, Ange Postecoglou. Last fall, he replaced Holger Osieck after Australia lost a friendly to France by a score of 6-0. It's never a desirable move when you have to replace a national team manager less than a year before the Cup. But perhaps this will have a positive effect on Australia's slim chances in Brazil.
